Yaoguai (Chinese: 妖怪), also known as "Demons", are a set of playable Races of Demi-Human People/Animals. They aren't recommended for beginner players in spite of their inherent advantages due to their impending Shapeshifting Tribulation.
Obtainment[]
It is not possible to recruit Yaoguais from Spirit Master Hall's recruitment.
Awakened Animals[]
Awakened Animals are raised into Yaoguais. They're the main source of Yaoguais as they can be raised into anything you desire with Thought Shards.
Recruitment[]
- You can attempt to Persuade any Yaoguai visiting your Sect to join. You can also invite Yaoguais found in other sects and they try to Persuade them (preferably Mortals or Qi shaping to avoid losing favor).
- Daemonia Temple always has Yaoguais disciples,
- Mt. Hundred Insects can randomly have some Yaoguai disciples.
- Random Yaoguai visitors may also come asking to be recruited in a "Plea for Protection".
Start[]
- On any start, it's possible to roll your Characters to YaoGuai if you so wish.
- On Immortal start, if you set the Narrow Escape difficulty option, there is a guaranteed YaoGuai from Inclusivity, as well as a chance at more from the rest of the random ones.
Comparison with Humans[]
See: Full list and explanation of Thought Shards
Advantages[]
YaoGuai have an Intelligence Shard system that gives them a leg up (or at least a tail) on their Human counterparts. E.g.:
- Movement Speed - Certain sub-races can be several* times faster than possible for Humans (Mortal).
- Qi Sense : can bypass the Qi Sense cap of 20.
They often start with better abilities and stats, which can be chosen if raised yourself. See: YaoGuai Raising
For sub-race specific advantages, see YaoGuai Subraces.
Disadvantages[]

Died before she could walk over to some slightly better winter gear.
Their inherent properties aren't exclusively boons. Almost all Blue Thoughts have negative Elemental Resistance, meaning that Yaoguai are typically weak to elemental damage. One way to counter this is to pick Tranquility for every single Intelligence Shard, but, that could take 300 days to make one YaoGuai. If you do that, you'll have no extra elemental resistance bonus from additional Tranquillity thought shards but you'll avoid picking up any extra elemental weakness.
In addition:
- Turtles are very slow.
- Rabbits tend to be slow* AND have no Temperature tolerance to speak of.
- Suspected to be a bug.
- Snakes have no head muscles (Disadvantageous for Physical Cultivation) and are pyrophobic (can't do some outer jobs, doesn't affect cultivation).
Shapeshifting Tribulation[]
Every YaoGuai cultivator will have to face a Shapeshifting Tribulation for going against the will of the heavens with their newly-obtained sentience. These might be hard if you don't know what you're doing. Later on in the game though, it can get difficult to fail them on purpose.
Failing the Tribulation will utterly destroy a Yaoguai Outer Disciple, while an Inner Disciple will be reverted to a Monster and become hostile.
Subraces[]

Forms[]

Before their shapeshifting tribulation, they have the appearance of a half-animal half-human. However, they unlock a set of 3 shapeshifting forms after passing their Shapeshifting Tribulation.
Monster[]
This is their standard appearance. In that form, they resemble a combination of a human and their respective animal. Their physiology also differs from standard humans.

Human[]

This is their "Human" form. They have some distinct features (no in-game consequence) depending on their species: cat ears and tails, gills for a snake, baldness and shell for a turtle, etc.
Note that the Turtle's baldness is unrelated to the Human Body Features "Bald" and has no gameplay consequences.
