Mental State is a Need of Inner Disciples (Cultivators) that affects their ability to Cultivate and Breakthrough. It doesn't apply to Outer Disciples (Mortals).

Law Effects[]

Xiandao[]

Mental State affects many different activities, including Cultivation Speed[1], Breakthroughs[2], and Artifact Crafting Success Chance[3] for Xiandao cultivators. It also changes depending on the cultivator's Cultivation Mode.

Cultivation Modes[]

During "Practice", and "Train", a cultivator's Mental state decreases to a minimum of the Base Mental State.

During "Mind", a cultivator's Mental state increases to a maximum of 100.

During "Balance", a Cultivator starts cultivating (Practice) when Mental State is greater than 50, and stops cultivating (Mind) when Mental State is under 30. It is not recommended to leave a cultivator on "Balance", as the 30-50 Mental State range significantly reduces Cultivation Speed. The Elysium mod allows for cultivation to be automatically performed between levels with better Cultivation Speed bonuses, such as 51-70 or 70-85 Mental State.

Mental State Levels[]

  • 95%+ = Pristine
  • 85% - 95% = Harmony
  • 70% - 85% = Composed
  • 50% - 70% = Stable
  • 30% - 50% = Unstable
  • 30%- = Breakdown

Mental State rate of change[]

The speed at which the Mental State changes depends on the current Mental State, activity, and Mood.

When Mental State is increasing, the higher the Mental State, the slower it increases[4]. The Mental State change rate depends on the current Mental State, the action being performed[5], and the result is multiplied with the Level of Stable Mental State (SpeedOfMindStateCoefficient) Property and the Mood multipliers[4].

  • When the Mental State is increasing, the lower the Cultivator's Mood, the slower Mental State changes, with the speed of change being 0.6x at 0 Mood and 1.8x at 200 Mood[4].
  • When the Mental State is decreasing, the lower the Cultivator's Mood, the faster Mental State changes, with the speed of change being 1.4x at 0 Mood and 0.75x at 108.3 or higher Mood[4].

Optimizing cultivation speed[]

 Purity Pill slows down the Mental State Change speed, and the mental state changes extremely slowly at high mood levels and in the 95 to 99 range. In practice, this means that at 100 Mental state you can cultivate for 2 days straight using 2 purity pills with a cultivator on the best Mood, regen your mental state once the pills wears off and start again. In simple steps :

  • Disable/Unequip your Base Mental State items
  • Regenerate Mind to 100 (barely) - 15 (from the pill themselves) - your Base Mental State items
  • Toggle/Reequip your base Mental State items and eat a Purity pill
  • Cultivate for a day, eat a second Purity pill, cultivate for another day
  • Repeat

Doing so will make the second Purity pill expire just as you reach 85 mental state (84 with no wasted time at all but it is not realistic). It is not worth using Base Mental State talismans compared to Cultivation speed or Stats improvement Talismans. Being under the effect of the pill when regenerating the mind is quite detrimental however so be careful here.

To avoid micromanagement, the Elysium Mod has a setting allowing you to consume Purity pills automatically when cultivating which handles everything for you (if you don't use base Mental State items). In this case, you want to (at least) check the Purity option as well as the "Practice Only" setting, and use a 86-100 cultivation range.

In case Purity pills are not available you have several options :

  • Disabling/Unequipping Base Mental State items to stay in the 30-50 Mental state as long as possible for optimal speed when regenerating then switching/equipping them back once you raise your desired values can be a significant improvement depending on the items available
  • If there are enough Mental State bonuses to allow Base Mental State to be boosted above 50, the cultivator can be permanently on the Practice training mode to maximize Cultivation point gain.
  • Otherwise, the average cultivation gained over time (Cult/time) is highest in the 50-70 range, which minimizes the amount of time required per cultivation point, and is the optimum cultivation range when using the Elysium mod without micromanagement or Purity Pills.
  • Without mods, the "Balance" cultivation method defaults to the 30-50 range, which is way worse than everything else mentioned here.

Shendao[]

Mental State is an important part of the Shendao Mental State Breakthrough mechanic.

There is a new Stage for every 100 Mental State, and certain requirements must be met to reach the next stage. The rate of Mental State change also varies with the stage.

  • Move (0-100)
  • Calm (100-200)
  • Still (200-300)
  • Sagely (300-400)
  • Wise (400-500)
  • Empty (500-600)
  • Spirit (600-700)

Physical[]

Mental State is solely affected by the Physical Cultivator's Mood. It is equal to half of the Cultivator's Mood. One way to increasing the Mood is remolding the Phallus for Male Physical Cultivators.

Medicines and Pills[]

Only applicable to  Xiandao Cultivation and  Shendao Cultivation. Medicines and Pills cannot be consumed by Physical Cultivators, as they are devoured for essence instead.

Branches[]

  • Cultivation Branch: +1 Base Mental State per Leader Effectiveness score.
  • Very Stressed branch leaders can reduce mental state by up to -198 Mental State

Spirit Roots Sympathy[]

A Cursed Spirit Root can reduce Mental State by up to -10 (0% Curse) to -40(100% Curse) per plant, while a Blessed Spirit Root increases it by 10 (0% Bless) to 40 (100% Bless) for any cultivator within a 11x11 square of the Spirit Root which is currently meeting all growth requirements[6][7]. If the Spirit Root is not meeting all growth requirements, it reduces Mental State by 5 instead. To access this bonus, the cultivator needs to be in the following aim(s):

This may be stacked to a maximum of 4 plants, as there is no known setup to have all 5 Spirit Roots affect a single tile while meeting all growth requirements.

Obsessions[]

An appeared obsession is -30 Mental state. They can be cleared with Shendao cultivators, meaning they are semi-temporary.

Some Torch Dragon clothing set (gender specific) will boost mental state by 15 per piece (+30 total):

Manuals[]

Only applicable to  Xiandao Cultivation as they are the only Cultivators who can learn Manuals. Manuals provide the largest increase to Mental State.
